In 1843, an enterprising businessman named Frederick Trent Stanley established a little shop in New Britain, Connecticut to manufacture door bolts and other hardware from wrought iron. Stanley's Bolt Manufactory was only one of dozens of small foundries and other backyard industries in town struggling to make a go of it by turning out metal products. But Stanley possessed a special innovative spirit and an uncommon passion for doing things right and his modest enterprise prospered and grew as The Stanley Works. In 1972 The Stanley Works purchased Ackley Manufacturing Company, the world’s leading manufacturer of hydraulic handheld tools, and acquired their specialty forestry air tools and hydraulic tools for utility construction, agriculture and underwater use. In 1984, The Stanley Works purchased HED, Inc., the largest U.S. manufacturer of mounted hydraulic breakers and compactors, and integrated HED's product line, design and manufacturing expertise with the Hydraulic Tools Product Group. In 1992, The Stanley Works purchased LaBounty Manufacturing, Inc., the global market leader for mounted, non-impact attachments.
